Gastric Bypass Advisor

As a result of your gastric bypass surgery you will be limited to the kinds of foods you can eat but you may be wondering which foods? Even before you think about getting a gastric bypass you will want to know the kinds of foods you are limited too or from and why. This is perfectly natural and deserves an explanation.

You may have heard that gastric bypass diets include a lot of protein. Protein is important to take a lot of when you are recovering because it helps your body heal. Also protein helps your body maintain muscle mass as you lose weight which is very important.

Once you’ve had your gastric bypass you will no longer be able to eat sweets. They will not only cause your body to go into ‘dumping syndrome’ which in of itself is unpleasant, they are also high in fat and calories. Calories are exactly the kind of thing you will be cutting back on.

Due to the size of your new stomach you won’t be able to digest fats as easily as you were before your surgery. When you take in a lot of fat it slows down the stomachs natural emptying process which can cause you to develop indigestion and acid reflux. Also your gastric bypass ‘bypasses’ a part of your intestine which deals with absorbing fats so the fats may irritate the part of the intestine now handling them causing diarrhea and or stomach problems.

Fiber will also be limited on your new diet. Fiber is digested in the stomach and since your new stomach is so much smaller it may not be able to handle a lot of fiber nor will it be able to produce as much stomach acid to digest that fiber.

Lastly you will be taking vitamins for the rest of your life to prevent a deficiency caused by your inability to eat as much food as previously.
